Guide to a Budget Seaside Holiday in Romania

Romania’s Black Sea coast is less known to international tourists but represents one of the cheapest options for a summer holiday in Europe. It’s an ideal choice if you’re looking for long, sandy beaches and prices that are often lower than those found in Bulgaria or Albania.

The key to the cheapest holiday in Romania is to focus on older, established resorts that have historically maintained a low price standard.

1. Best Budget Destinations

The Romanian coast is primarily concentrated south of the city of Constanța. You will find the best and cheapest accommodation options in the following areas:

I. Mamaia (Northern Part)

Mamaia is considered the queen of Romanian resorts. While its southern end features modern, expensive high-rises, the northern part offers a wide range of affordable lodging.

  • Why it’s cheap: There is high competition among hotels that use low prices to attract families and younger travelers.
  • What to look for: Focus on apartments and older hotels in North Mamaia. They offer wide, sandy beaches and good access to restaurants.

II. Eforie Nord / Eforie Sud

These two resorts are iconic for family holidays in Romania and have historically focused on budget recreation.

  • Eforie Nord: Larger, known for its therapeutic mud and Lake Techirghiol. Accommodation here is very simple, and prices are among the lowest on the entire coast.
  • Eforie Sud: Quieter and smaller, with lodging predominantly in villas and private rooms perfect for low-budget travelers.

III. Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn

The entire southern coastal strip consists of themed resorts (Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptun) built in the 70s that offer the best low prices.

  • Pricing: In these resorts, prices for accommodation and food are often close to Romanian national prices, representing a huge saving compared to most other European seaside destinations.
  • Accommodation: Dominated by older but spacious 2- and 3-star hotels with large capacity.

2. Cheapest Accommodation Types (Hotels and Private)

In Romania, you can choose between two very cost-effective options: a cheap hotel or a private apartment.

A. Hotel or Pension with Meals (Pensiuni)

While All-Inclusive is less common in Romania than in Turkey or Egypt, many hotels offer Half Board (demi-pensiune), which can be very economical.

  • Pensions (Pensiuni): These private guesthouses are cheaper than hotels. They offer simple rooms and often include a homemade breakfast.
  • Older 2- and 3-Star Hotels: In resorts like Eforie or Saturn, you will find many large, older hotels that maintain low prices and offer basic but sufficient comfort for a budget holiday.

B. Private Apartments and Rooms

For the greatest flexibility and savings on food:

  • Apartments (Apartamente): Private apartments with kitchenettes are ideal. Self-catering minimizes your food expenses. These are particularly popular in Mamaia and Constanța.
  • Room Rentals: In smaller villages, you can rent a room in a private house (similar to Sobe in Croatia), which is the absolute cheapest option for individuals or couples.

C. Camping

Romania has great campsites, particularly near Vama Veche (a more alternative, bohemian resort). Campsites are well-equipped and very cheap.

3. Financial Tips for Romania

  1. Timing: Travel in June or September. The sea is warm then, but prices drop significantly. August is the most expensive and crowded month.
  2. Dining: Eat at local restaurants (Terasa) instead of expensive tourist cafés. Romanian cuisine is tasty and very budget-friendly. A typical meal (like Mici or Ciorbă) often costs just a few Euros.
  3. Currency and Payment: Use local currency, the Leu (RON). While card payments are common, cash is still important in smaller shops and guesthouses.
  4. Local Prices: Prices for sunbeds, snacks, and activities are generally very low compared to the European Union, making it easier to manage your overall budget.

By focusing on value-oriented destinations like Eforie Nord or the southern resorts and choosing private lodging, you can have a very inexpensive and enjoyable holiday on the Black Sea coast.
