Guide to a Budget Seaside Holiday in Turkey

Turkey has long been one of the world’s top destinations for an affordable beach holiday. Thanks to its vast offerings and strong competition among hotels, particularly within the All-Inclusive system, Turkey offers excellent value for money.

The key to the cheapest holiday in Turkey is choosing less luxurious but reliable accommodation and the right part of the coast.

1. Best Budget Destinations

To minimize costs, focus on areas with a large supply of older or smaller hotels that do not fall into the most luxurious category. Avoid expensive resorts like those in Belek.

I. The Turkish Riviera (Mediterranean)

The area around Antalya offers an enormous range of lodging, where competition is fiercest.

  • Alanya: This is probably the cheapest area on the Riviera. While the beaches may not be as pristine as in Belek, you will find countless 3- and 4-star hotels offering All-Inclusive or Half Board packages at prices unbeatable in Europe.
  • Side and Kemer: These offer a good middle ground. Look for lodging in villas or in smaller boutique hotels in Side, which are further from the main promenade.

II. The Aegean Coast

The Aegean coast is popular with British tourists and is slightly more expensive than the Riviera, but it offers more beautiful views and cheaper options outside the main centers.

  • Marmaris: This is a large city with a busy nightlife. Avoid the main center and look for apartments or pensions in the quieter parts of the bay.
  • Bodrum: The most luxurious, but if you stay in a smaller surrounding town (e.g., Gümbet or Turgutreis), you can find very reasonably priced private hotels.

2. Cheapest Accommodation Types (All-Inclusive and Guesthouses)

Paradoxically, the cheapest way to travel in Turkey is often through an All-Inclusive package at a 3- or 4-star hotel.

A. All-Inclusive (For Maximum Budget Control)

If your goal is maximum savings and you don’t want to worry about food, All-Inclusive is the best route.

  • Price Per Day: The price for a full day (room, food, drinks, hotel activities) in a 3- or 4-star Turkish hotel is often lower than the price of just lodging without meals in many European destinations. This keeps your entire holiday within a firm budget.
  • Search for: Focus on older hotels or those located further from the beach that offer shuttle services.

B. Private Apartments (Apart Oteli)

For more flexibility and longer stays:

  • Apartments with Kitchenettes: In larger cities (like Alanya or Marmaris), you can find Apart oteli that function like a hotel but offer a fully equipped kitchen. This allows you to cook breakfast and lunch, avoiding additional costs.
  • Pensions (Pansiyon): In smaller, more authentic towns, you will find Pansiyon—simple, family-run guesthouses that offer rooms for very low prices.

C. Hostels and Campsites

For the absolute lowest cost, hostels (especially in Istanbul and Antalya) and campsites in quieter bays are a good choice.

3. Financial Tips for Turkey

  1. Timing: Travel in May, early June, or September, October. The weather during these periods is ideal (warm but not scorching), and hotel prices drop by 20–40% compared to the peak season.
  2. Currency and Payment: Paying in Turkish Lira (TRY) is always more advantageous than paying in Euros or Dollars, especially for small purchases at markets or paying for a taxi. Always pay in Lira outside the hotel.
  3. Bargaining: At markets, in small shops, and for taxis, always negotiate the price. Agree on the price upfront.
  4. Transport: Use the local cheap minibuses (Dolmuş) for moving around the resort area. They are very inexpensive, quick, and efficient.

Thanks to strong competition and the availability of great value packages, Turkey remains one of the best choices for a cheap and comfortable seaside holiday.
